From the bay of plenty, Captain Cook went overland to Thames and so did we. This was one of the first towns he named (in honor of the English river). The drive eastward from the mount was through vines upon vines of kiwifruit country.
Our bounty as we approached Auckland was a sampling of savory pies that were still on my list.
Mount Maunganui was short and sweet. I'm reading the bus guide book on the way out of town. Do many passengers really like to stay in this Auckland holiday resort town for several days? I'm a bit exhausted by this stage, and pretty glad we didn't give any more money to the pompus hostel owner or the 'fabulous' activities on offer. They included paying for anything from volunteer work to seeing glow worms at night... Both of which we did in Dunedin for no money at all. As roads became highways we fast approached the end of the magic adventure... Yes we are a little exhausted.
At Mission Beach we tried a Memphis Meltdown ice cream. The 'Big Nuts' flavor was the best, even better than Magnum!
What could be better that night than a few drinks in Auckland with Sophie and Nigel, who were so excited to tell us where to go in South America. They are so laid back and really down to earth when compared to our other peers. We ended up playing the pub quiz with them at the same time. Steph won a trip for two down the coast which she promptly found someone to swap us for a round of drinks. I on the other hand, one us a bonus prize of a pitcher of beer and a bungee jump off the harbor bridge. Unfortunately it was a 2-4-1 deal and I couldn't find anyone to go with me. Hmmm maybe my Mom will think that was certainly for the best...
What is far more exciting is that the next stop on our journey will be South America ! ! !
