Bon Souveniers de Nouvelle Zealande

Supermarket Souvenirs

Mallowpuffs - Mallowpuffs chocolate cookies are my personal favorite. Yes yes, marshmallow-filled cookies with a smores combination are not unique to New Zealand. However the mallowpuff seems to get the ratio between biscuit, chocolate and marshmellow just perfect.

Pascal's Pineapple Lumps - At first we didn't like these all that much. The chemically-flavoured pineapple center was rock hard. But they grew on us with the temperature swings on the island. The center softens when warmed, you see. If it's cold out, you can just keep them on your tongue for a while, providing a delicious treat for our long treks.

Meal Mates - We first tried megameal biscuits at Rob & Prudence's in Dunedin. They are a little pricey compared to other crackers (as cheapskates, we never bought any). I do think they are well worth it because of their natural taste from vegetables - tastier than most boring crackers.

Burger Rings - Burger rings were a good testament to how much this country loves burgers. Like the flavored crisps you find in England, someone in a lab somewhere has discovered how to spray these crumbly little rings with the flavor of a hamburger. Hats off, Mr Penguin.

Personal Souveniers

On a final note, we took full advantage of clothing technology to help keep us warm, using the sheep population's excellent merino insulation. We invested in some excellent baselayers from Icebreaker. The special merino creates a microclimate between your skin and the icebreaker, keeping the temperature at a constant in extreme conditions. This is excellent protection when layered under a fleece and north face windbreaker. Especially because it can get cold here - real fast.

Tiny kids would also like the buzzy bee toy range. Finally I would definitely also grab a pair or two of possom or merino socks and maybe even some Canturbury track kit.
