Oamaru's claim to fame waddles in from the sea. The town is a home to both the rare yellow-eyed and blue penguin. There are designated areas where you can pay for organised viewings of penguin colonies (at the heavy ushering hand of local tourism).
We would be damned if we were to leave Oamaru after several failed attempts at meeting a penguin beach-side. Luckily some of the other woofers knew the 'secret spot' for night viewing. And so we piled into the van of Jack and Alix (from Dunedin) and went to see some of these famous blue penguins.
