We have disembarked in Shanghai

Chris:
And are very excited to explore! In fact we hopped off a gruelling 23-hour train from Xian, and were a bit tired all the same. The 3rd class cattle-car sleeper almost pushed us to the limit of exhaustion. Very social - but also very smelly and a little unsettling when you have a stomach bug from too much street food in Xian. The 23hr duration came as a big surprise. We woke up to pack up our bags and get off after 11hrs only to wait around until half a day later. Crazy!! This what happens when you book last minute tickets in chinese with hand gestures.

But then our taxi from Shanghai station took us to the best hostel I have ever been to - the Mingtown Etour. It's actually more of a boutique hotel that is stylish but very relaxed. For a major city, the rate was only 170 (£17) for a double room, with garden bar and terraces smack in the center of town by people's square.

Shanghai is a mesmorizing city. After a much needed recharge, we went straight to asia's champs elysee and then 'the bund' boardwalk (unfortunately completely under construction for the 2010 world expo).

Our experiences in China thus far have been so very interesting and friendly, while often fast, loud and in-your-face.

Tomorrow we plan a trip to the highest hotel in the world!
