One day, when we had almost exhausted all Buenos Aires had to offer tourists, we decided to take a trip out to the small town of Tigre by train. I was pleased to see that the trains here run on the left just like in Britain: the Brits were influential in the construction of the railways here apparently. and even the underground runs on the left. It was a calm thirty minute trip through the suburbs from BA´s Retiro station until we reached the small, charming town of Tigre.
The town is apparently named after the jaguars that the first European settlers hunted in the area. It was founded in 1820 and became an important port city. Now Tigre is a popular destination for Summer holidaying Paleños (people from Buenos Aires) due to its vicinity to the city.
When we arrived we found that much of the shops (including those in the daily craft fair) were closed up, presumably due to it being low season. However, after a quick lunch with a great view over the Tigre River, we were still able to take a boat trip. We saw some incredible holiday homes used by Paleños in the Summer months.
